There will be a fiscal shutdown, a pension haircut, and bank failures that will rock the world. It is criminally negligent that rating agencies are not blowing the whistle on this." The true message of the article: QE was too little, too late, and this is the lesson for the West. We must cut borrowing drastically over the next decade, and offset this with ultra-easy monetary policy. Does Downing Street understand this? Does the White House? Does the European Central Bank? Clearly not.

Quote of the day:

To understand why the GDP numbers could be so good when the economy all around looks so bad, it is necessary to understand a few pertinent details of the GDP calculation. It is necessary to see just what meat and meat by-products go into this economic sausage. For one thing, GDP includes government spending...but does not SUBTRACT any of the borrowing the government does to fund its spending. And obviously, government spending is in no way a reflection of private sector economic activity. http://www.dailyreckoning.com/

Warren Buffett buying Burlington Northern Santa Fe Railroad could make a lot of sense. As the price of gasoline rises it will become more expensive to ship by truck as compared with shipping by rail. So at least in the short run the railroads could experience increased demand for shipping, as companies move away from shipping by truck and towards shipping by rail.

Pepe Escobar on: The AFPak Volcano - "Pashtunistan"

an excerpt:

"Washington's rationale for occupying Afghanistan - never spelled out behind the cover story of "fighting Islamic extremism" - is pure Pentagon full spectrum dominance: to better spy on both China and Russia with forward outposts of the empire of bases; to engage in Pipelineistan, via the Trans-Afghan (TAPI) pipeline, if it ever gets built; and to have a controlling hand in the Afghan narco-trade via assorted warlords. Cheap heroin is literally flooding Russia, Iran and Eastern Europe. Not by accident, Moscow regards opium/heroin as the key issue to be tackled in Afghanistan, not Islamic fundamentalism".

Good Choice of article, OrwellianUK. It is written by a person, a South American, who knows what he is talking about.

Pashtunistan is, by the way, where I am.
