And I expect the Russians to continue asserting themselves more and more. Last year they went all out in taking back control of their energy. The Americans, the Dutch, the Japanese, and the Norwegians got the boot.

Globally, the big players continue to deploy their pieces on the Grand Chessboard. It's going to be an "exciting" year!

Japanese shipping -- Yes, indeed, and despite increased sales. It's the same reason Japanese airlines are cutting routes between outlying cities. Protect the market!

Oil is still cheap, hovering around $60/bbl., and yet the shakedown has begun.

Oil v. Israel lobby -- Recently there has been a lot more open public discourse in the US about the Israel lobby, which is of course good, but an unbelievable corollary has emerged from the discussion: It is claimed in some quarters that the US attacked Iraq solely to do the bidding of Israel, and that it had nothing to do with oil! The proponents of this wacky theory totally fail to see that oil underpins everything. You can bet your last barrel that the neocons see it, and so do the Russians and Chinese. Since I've blogged this I won't go into it any more here.

A friend of mine on MySpace posted this article as a bulliten.I found it interesting enough to post here.It brought to mind the FTW article on H.A.A.R.P by Michel Chossudovsky in which he quotes from Dr.Rosalie Bertell's analysis wherein she predicts that:"The project is likely to be 'sold' to the public as a space shield against incoming weapons,or,for the more gullible,a device for repairing the ozone layer." Looks like she was right. http://www.willthomas.net/Chemtrails/Articles/Chemtrails_In_US_Schools.htm

Item to today's paper: A trend among Japanese airlines is retiring large aircraft and switching to smaller models. A major reason given is fuel economy.

Hot dog. A Japanese academic journal has just asked me to pen an article on peak oil. The same issue will have a peak oil article by a Japanese academic, too. The editor says they are taking this matter seriously.

Speaking of Richard Heinberg (mentioned in relation to an article on Japan in the previous item), a Japanese friend in the translation and publishing industry told me last year that there were plans to translate "The Party's Over" into Japanese. Have heard nothing about it since, though.
