DEEPWATER HORIZON WILL BE THE END OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

June 1, 2010 – The Obama Administration today opened a criminal investigation into all the events before, during and since the April 20th explosion that triggered the largest environmental catastrophe in human history. (If it’s not now, it will be.) -- This investigation is going to end badly for everybody.

As the catastrophe worsens, as people grasp what it means... there will be blood demanded and blood spilled. The tens of millions of soon-to-be victims will not accept less. There will be an almost insatiable need for vengeance and all of the pent-up rage after swallowing all of the lies fed to the American people by Wall Street and Washington for so long will have found a single, unifying issue. The frustration built up in every corner of our lives will become a blowout exactly like the Gulf…. Because of the Gulf.

We know that BP, the mainstream media and the U.S. government have at best deceived, and at worst outright lied about two key things. The first is the actual flow rate (now minimally) confirmed at 75,000 bpd. (I’m kind of leaning towards 125,000 bpd myself.) The second is the fact that there are two very huge leaks – not one. The second one is about five miles west of the bore hole. That means the explosion caused geologic ruptures. (Hello… CNN? Anybody in there?)

Nobody has any credibility here. Nobody. It’s all finger pointing. It’s tasteless. It’s transparent. It’s embarrassing. It's insulting. And it is infuriating.

-- For me a rosy side to this is that Dick Cheney has dived deep. He will be remembered for Halliburton. Those skeletons will be recalled and resurrected. Bush-Cheney’s role in turning the Minerals Management Service into a roving, drug-crazed whore house will become (finally) something actionable. Of course, the American populace didn’t get upset when MMS, Interior and Energy lied to them about how much cheap energy there was going to be… forever. Yes, Old FTW readers will remember that we took on MMS in 2004, 2005 and 2006.

This is going to be a nasty, nasty catfight and the legal and political ramifications of Deepwater Horizon will – I am very confident -- eventually bring about the collapse of the United States government. They will certainly bankrupt it (sooner) and force it into default. Political collapse is the third stage of overall collapse (Orlov). It was coming anyway. It’s just going to get here a lot sooner now. Social collapse will begin as soon as the people from the Gulf coast become refugees.

All I am waiting on now to announce CollapseNet’s launch is for one last piece of banking apparatus to fall into place. We’re ready. The people who have made this happen are just amazing and I speak for all of us (about 15) when I say that we know we’re needed and we are answering the call.

I think Bush and Cheney being punished would be a rosy side for all of us Mike.I posted something to Collapse's Facebook wall recently about forgiveness, and it being a step in our evolution. But,that doesn't mean we lie down and take their shit either, because that just enables bullies. They should still be punished for their crimes, not for the sake of revenge, but for the sake of justice.Of right and wrong.Sorry for the rant folks, just had to get that out of my system.

"The second is the fact that there are two very huge leaks – not one. The second one is about five miles west of the bore hole. That means the explosion caused geologic ruptures."

Ok, Matt Simmons wrote a good book in 2005. It was nice to have a wealthy republican member of the establishment join the peak oil awareness movement.

BUT ... Matt's apparent claim that the DWH blowout caused a geologic rupture miles away is extraordinary. This has never happened in any of the very numerous massive gushers in the long history of oil drilling. Even Spindletop didn't do that. Neither did the other underwater gushers.

Matthew R Simmons graduated from the University of Utah in 1965 with a degree in accounting, not geology. He is an investment banker.

Has any credible source confirmed this story?

The Oil Drum is full of numerous oil community people who are not fans of either BP or the US govt. Yet absolutely no one thinks this claim is credible.

The kindest thing said about Mr. Simmons is that he is aged 65+, and might be suffering from stress or confusion. Perhaps he has read reports of the huge underwater oil plumes, (which might not be surfacing partially due to massive use of surfactants at depth) and took these to mean that there was another leak site?

The article Big Banks Face Financial Doomsday in 2012 needs to be read along with Matt Taibbi's latest on the Financial Reform, Wall Street's War.

Crazy crazy times we live in. I have to agree with Mike, this is the last straw on the camels back for the U.S and the industrialized world.

I'm 23 years old, from Australia and one amongst only a small handful of people my age who can comprehend the collapse around us and what it really means.

Collapse is like a giant mirror being held out in front of me, making me look into it and myself to ask the big questions.

While most others my age are still studying full-time or developing their careers, I have put all ambitions on hold while I try to fully grasp the gravity of our situation. Why bother busting my balls trying to make a career with no future? What good is a general career in a collapsing global economy?

I have never had a lot of money and experienced a lot of money, so I don't believe I will miss it when the time comes. I have never had a dream job that offers me everything I could have ever wanted, so I will not miss that.

I have seen many people exposed to the facts of collapse, seen the 5 minute affect of "Wow that's crazy, were in for some bumpy times" only to immediately forget about it like it was some fiction story and continue about their cycle, doing nothing at all to psychologically prepare and physically prepare...

I guess that's why it's going to be called "The Die-Off"

I have no faith that anyone is going to pay for this disaster. BP will have it tied up in court for years. Window dressing measures will be taken to make it look like some "change" in regulation will be made. A few peons will do a perp walk and Tony Hayward will lose his job with an ample severance package.

Time for some good news.

The Highlands of Scotland — some 200,000 people living in an area the size of New Hampshire. Lots of small villages (pop. circa 300) with a great spread of skill sets. Plenty of wild deer roaming the hillsides, thousands of hectares of pine forest and — GoM oil spill permitting — seas that teem with edible life.

There are lifeboats, people. Use them.

Hi MCR, met you at the Peak Oil conference in Edinburgh a few years back. Stay lucky.

The Central Bank of Iran is converting a sum of 45 billion euros of its currency reserves into gold and dollars.

A question:
Will the links provided by me, Jenna, Mike and other readers be free when CoLLapsenet is launched?

An explosion would require air (oxygen). How did this air get into the substrata, given the positive pressure in the riser? Maybe I'm missing something. It happens.

It's important to place the blame first within oneself.

Most of us have said to ourselves at one time or another, "Whew, glad the price of gas is $.99 a gallon." Or maybe, "boy, I can't afford $3.29 per gal." It's most all of our fault what's happening in the GoM. It's my fault.

We all at one time or another in our lives have made a god out of money. "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money." -Matthew 6:24

Find the sin within first

The whole damn system is guilty. This ain't about BP, the CIA/KBR/Halliburtons, the Bushes, or even the United States. The entire modern/post-modern world has proven to be a failed experiment by the TPTB, and they won't indict themselves. The US, like all corporate shells, was created to shield the real perpetrators from justice.

"We will make certain that those responsible clean up the mess they have made and restore or replace the natural resources lost or injured in this tragedy," Holder said in a statement Tuesday.

This is an impossible allegation by Holder and one that will never be supported by the ongoing geophysical realities.

We are looking at embedded institutional denial but the Gulf Oil spill is going to snap that hardened structure like a twig in a spring storm.

Is Matt Simmons the only source for the second oil leak theory?

Weaseldog said...

On the second leak notion, I've seen some speculation that a previous well drilled by the Deepwater Horizon blew out. It would be that other well that is spewing out the lion's share of the oil.

I don't have any facts to support this notion, but it fits the facts better than a theory that the crust cracked.

As to oxygen for the explosion, the oil and gas are under extreme pressure. As the pressure is relieved, the gas boils out of solution. This state change from solute to gas provides the force of the explosion. It's a bit like a steam explosion. No chemical reaction is occurring, just a state change.

When we were attacked by Saudi's and Egyptians, we invaded Afghanistan and Iraq. Since the Brits destroyed the Gulf of Mexico, we'll probably go after Brazil and Botswana.

Unknown said...

I'm not convinced either, but I'm also keeping an open mind about the claim of a second huge leak.

Simply the fact that BP's CEO flatly denies the existence of a such a leak gets my attention.

There have been at least two independent scientific surveys of the water column that found enormous submerged plumes, which scientists say is unprecedented. They're claimed to be not just effects of dispersants.

And, Matt Simmons spent many months of hard research, reading MANY primary engineering journal articles, before he published Twilight In The Desert. (I own a copy of his book.) So he's not some one-dimensional money-focussed investment banker. He does understand the oil business probably better than any of us.

Having said that, I'll join the skeptics.

MCR, do you have additional, perhaps confidential, sources?

Jeff,

The danger is undersea explosions due to methane hydrates. There are hugh deposits under the sea bed. The structure remains stable unless heat is applied causing the gas trapped in the water structure to very rapidly expand.

Did Deepwater methane hydrates cause the BP Gulf explosion?

Halliburton is well aware of the dangers due to hydrates, especially in deepwater drilling ...

Halliburton Presentation May Explain Horizon Oil Rig Explosion and Fire

I know where you're coming from Mike - I was there a long while ago... I foresaw refugees as a minor problem though, what really has me worried is the potential for a world-wrecker... something we'll be able to see by the time the gulf has gone...

This is where absolute panic will cross national boundaries and America itself will become the focus of world-wide and universal anger... Allies will desert as soon as they realise the mood of their populations (which will mirror their own for a change)...

The question that will be asked is going to be whether a particular nation was at fault... If every nation is doomed, or believes it is doomed, then we might expect a world war against a single nation... Even with America's great military might, it has no chance against the combined military forces of the world...

Previous allies may sit on the fence, or join in with greater fervour... either way, they can't be counted on...

Whether this is the collapse of America or the beginning of the collapse of the world, it's progressing at a terribly infuriating pace, not slow like global warming or quick like 2012, but at the speed of tide, current and fickle weather...

Ok, first thing is that justice is served on those who have been shown to be negligent, incompetent or fraudulent.

Ok, these people are gone, locked up, whatever, now the core issue still remains: These people who have caused this mess have got away with it because the population has allowed it. We have to ask ourselves, and not outsource it to something/someone else 'Can i accept responsibility for my own life' because thats what we all have to do to move past the type of society we have at the moment. We have to take responsibility for dealing with ourselves, our neighbours, our personal development, our food, our water, the lot. Its a tall order, but its what we have neglected for some time in our societies.

the practical bit - There is no money for a brand new infrastructure based on electric cars or wind turbines. If we can find another nikola tesla then its all go, but we still need to persuade china to let us have rare earth magnets. We got lots of material assets, we should develop them. If we cultivate and promote the hemp plant and use it for diesel or methanol, there is immediate substitution of crude oil based liquid fuels. I estimate a piece of land the size of the U.K dedicated to growing hemp would produce enough methanol to meet americas current crude oil consumption. Its pretty radical, but its immediately doable and practical, with far reaching benefits. HEMP has never let anyone down, the U.S of all countries should know this.

The spill is the tipping point, what comes after is the tough part. I wish anyone who reads this blog the best of luck and success in your future endeavours in the transition ahead.

If we align with nature, we are unstoppable.

Brutus said...

The oil reservoir deep 5000 ft below the Gulf of Mexico had 'equalized' pressure with the weight above it.

What happens when pressure 'A' (the crude oil' becomes displaced with pressure 'B' (the ocean above)?

Also read somewhere that BP had drilled at this location due to the fact that it was on a fault-line, hence the crust was thinner at the well-head site.

Oldbeeza said...

The current disaster in the GoM is just the latest example of the institutionalised arrogance of big oil. I recommend readers check out the history of the international oil companies operations in the River Niger delta and their effects on the local people and environment. More than 40 percent of the oil the US imports comes from this area and more oil is spilled into the local environment EVERY YEAR ,year after year, than has been spilled from the Deepwater Horizon.

"It’s kind of oozing in the Gulf.”

For those of you who missed it -- and you weren’t alone if you did --there was an earthquake in the Gulf of Mexico this past February.

In regards to the comment made by Brutus I did some research -here is what was discovered.

That it may fuel ongoing debates on issues ranging from long-term geo-political concerns to safety of area residents to a new understanding of the geologic footprint of the entire region is one story.

That it happened at all is another.

What we do know is this: At around 10 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 10, a 5.2 magnitude quake, approximately 160 miles south of New Orleans, struck in the Gulf of Mexico. Its recorded depth was five kilometers.

What we don’t know is why.

The quake, while noted by academia and those who get paid to notice such things, was barely mentioned in the mainstream media -- it received a mere two paragraphs on MSNBC online.

Jack Reed, a retired Texaco geologist/geophysicist and something of a Don Quixote on the issue of an active tectonic plate in the Gulf of Mexico, wasn’t surprised by the quake or, for that matter, the reaction to it.

“It happened 123 miles offshore -- who cares?” he said, reflecting the media and public’s apathy rather than his own.

But according to Louisiana State University geologist Roy Dokka, who should care are the people of the region. Saying it was one of the most significant quakes to hit the region, Dokka told a local New Orleans television reporter that it should provide a warning to erosion officials that Louisiana’s coastline is shifting fault lines throughout the region.

“These faults are moved largely because south Louisiana is very unstable ground,” Dokka said. “It’s kind of oozing in the Gulf.”
