Letter to The Independent

The following letter was written to the editor of the British newspaper, The Independent, about their article, Fade to Black: Is This The End of Oil? Mike is asking blog readers to write to the paper in support of his letter.

Michael C. Ruppert

As one who has labored with Colin Campbell, Matt Simmons, and Chris Skrebowski to educate about Peak Oil, I have to say that your article has brought me to tears; tears of gratitude. There you have it. The words and truths we have fought so hard to get into the mainstream for so many years have appeared with an eloquence, judgment, and intelligence I had never expected to witness. We cannot get this kind of truth told in the States yet, but your story will crack a rapidly melting North American glacier even further. CNN embarrasses itself on a daily basis now. What's happening in the North Sea is happening in Dubai, Mexico, Indonesia, the U.S., and yes, even Saudi Arabia.

My own book is in the Harvard Business School Library. It committed the cardinal sin of linking Peak Oil to 9/11 yet it has never been refuted (acknowledged) by the U.S. government or major American media. It is in its fifth printing and ranks at Amazon in the top 5 for Political Reference and Public Affairs/Administration four years after its publication. In it, I predicted the exact economic and energy picture that now confronts us as a species.

I am circulating the link for your story throughout the North American Peak Oil movement. It will give American Peak Oilists a big shot in the arm. We have been kicked around pretty thoroughly for a long time, waiting for moments of sane coverage. It is my fervent prayer that Michael Savage's skills remain focused on the issue and that both his editors' courage and pocketbook will allow that to happen.

  1. ...And America continues to sleep walk to her own demise.

    Nice letter Mike.

The choice for survival has now become the individual choice. We must find the information to prepare ourselves and our family for the inevitable future.

I will post this on my blog "Floating Down Denial" today for what it's worth.

It is frustrating to read and hear all the nonsense out there every day and indeed refreshing to see an article like this outside the peak oil "community". I can only imagine how much more so for you, Mike.

  3. Here in Japan, I think the situation is even worse than in the US. The term "peak oil" is hardly known among the public. On a daily basis, the media drum in the message that high fuel prices are due to "speculators."

NEW YORK (AP) — Floods that have inundated the Midwest could reduce world corn supplies and drive food prices higher at a time when Americans are already stretching their grocery budgets and people in poor countries have rioted over rising food costs. ...

"Floodwaters also hurt soybean crops, sending prices to near all-time highs. Wheat, oats, rice and other food commodities were damaged, too."

  8. Oil edges lower as Saudi readies new output boost:

It will be fun to watch just how much(or little) their production increases.

  9. These presentations by Matt Simmons are quite enlightening.

The third one down is a real shocker. The world's oil infrastructure is literally crumbling because of rust! This is going to seriously exacerbate the production decline. And then there is the Export Land Model, a theory which is holding up well.

Airlines: What a mess. They are chucking magazine racks, charging for peanuts -- doing everything imaginable to compensate for expensive fuel.

  10. the oil drum had a Matt Simmons interview posted today (maybe yesterday...). In the interview the news caster uttered the phrase "demand destruction." Was that a phrase first used by Mike?

  11. d! This Wikipedia article on demand destruction in fact specifically names MCR and Matt Simmons. And there is no doubt both have been instrumental in popularizing the term.

  12. Michael Ruppert is a most uncommon American author. Very few people are really aware of the fact that the book he has written can be said to be the most important book of its time - and the time itself is unprecedented in known human history...

  13. Mike is correct, FINALLY the idea if Peak Oil is getting some mainstream attention. I saw Robert Hirsch on CNBC the other day...but you can tell the 'talking heads' just want to know how to make money off this (or more precisely what it means to the stock/financial markets), not what PO really means for all of us.

  14. Attn: News Editor, The Independent

The article "Fade to Black: Is This The End of Oil?" paints a much needed picture of Peak Oil - clearly this issue has the potential to be the biggest news story of the rest of our lives.

Author Mike Ruppert recently wrote you a letter in support of "Fade to Black", and in it he mentions his book Crossing The Rubicon. If ever there was a book that has given its readers a window on the future, it is this one. I highly recommend reading it if you want to get a true understanding of Peak Oil, The War on Terror, and 9/11.

No one likes to think that things really work this way, but the reality is that Mike Ruppert's analysis has been spot on since the day it was written over 4 years ago. Even if you will not be allowed to cover this topic in your newspaper, I believe your work will still benefit from the deeper understanding his book provides.
