  1. The last link -about OPEC- did not work for me, but a search of the site brought up this link for that article which does:

China already paying in euros. Here's one of the real reasons for all the saber-rattling toward Iran.

  6. Regarding gas "opec" story:
"E.U. Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs on Monday warned natural gas producers such as Russia and Algeria that if they considered forming a cartel, he would strongly push the development of nuclear power to meet the E.U.'s energy needs."

  7. Ha! Gas consumers are already desperately trying ways to dissuade gas producers from forming a gas OPEC.

"Speaking after a strategic energy review with U.S. officials, including Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman and Deputy Secretary of State John Negroponte, Piebalgs said a gas cartel wouldn't be in the interests of producer countries."

Is that a veiled threat, or what? And they seem to think (or want gas producers to think) that coal and nuclear can stand in for gas, but the picture's not that rosy. Coal reserve figures have been substantially revised downward (see "peak coal" posting), and with uranium inventories running out, production won't be able to keep pace with rising demand.

Nihil Matters -- actually, that item is quite ON topic, I think. Nice catch!

  8. This may well have been mentioned on here before, but I only saw it recently at Carolyn Baker's blog. It's a film on Peak Oil and the role of 9-11 within that. I watched the part available online (about half of the DVD, and thought it was very well done, and in line with Mike's work. Here's the link:

  11. gaelic girl, many thx for that interesting link. some of the speakers (ie heinberg, meacher, von buelow) are sterling. others are more questionable. at least one is associated with a holocaust denial website. (full disclosure: i have had a run-in with this person in the past regarding his association) see:

  12. ftw admin: Thanks for the heads-up on that....which one is the Holocaust denier? I looked at your link, but didn't remember any of those names in the clip I watched. It's too bad that the makers of that film would include someone of that ilk, when they have other such legit people as Julian Darley, et al. It tarnishes the rest of the film, in my view, and I'm sure many others.

To understand the significance of this article, it has to be seen in the overall context of how Russia has for the past year or so been giving foreign capital the boot and reasserting control over its oil and gas.

It is probably worth watching for some laughs and to see what others think of us.
