With the arrival of Peak Oil, the curtain has closed on Act 1 of the drama Petroleum Man. What will happen in Act 2? Chekhov said, "If there's a gun on the wall at the beginning of the play, by the end it must go off." In the world's nuclear arsenal are many guns on the wall. If life copies art, will there be an Act 3 in which the players, having learned their lesson the hard way, live sustainably? To explore these and other questions... FTW's Act 2 Blog. Liked the link about college grads and minimum wage jobs. But the entire article misses the point that an alternative explanation is that we have an oversupply of college grads because of government subsidies. So everyone who can, can get a degree through insane borrowing, and no increase in overall capabilities has happened because the lower end of the distribution has been filled in. As someone who hires regularly, I certainly can't find qualified people, regardless of how MANY have degrees, they have nothing else, they aren't provided critical thinking skills, they avoid the math and sciences, and can barely negotiate balancing a checkbook, let alone scientific study or analysis.
And the "experts" proclaiming the Anthropocene...aren't THE experts. They are the folks who WANT the epoch named, an entirely different thing. The real experts....they haven't proclaimed anything yet..maybe because they don't have the myopic perspective of those trying to sell an idea for some reason or another.
